We provide peace of mind — your pet is in exceptional hands with quality emergency care

Many situations and conditions that lead to the need for emergency care can be avoided with preventive services or proactive changes to behaviors and habits. Understanding this, we at San Marco Animal Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, partner closely with our clients and their pets to prevent the risk of medical conditions associated with severe complications. We also work with clients to help them manage those patterns or behaviors that could lead to traumatic injuries in the future; for instance, spaying and neutering reduce the urge to escape and mate — tendencies that can result in serious accidents.

With all that being said, even the most well-intentioned, responsible, and well-prepared pet-owning families may encounter the “worst,” and often these accidents and startling changes in our pets’ health status arise during the most unexpected and inconvenient of times. Since emergencies do not keep “regular business hours,” neither do we! Our clinic is open seven days a week. We welcome walk-ins.

And we are also equipped to accept transfers from overnight care facilities, which is particularly beneficial when situations are touch-and-go and demand continuity of care. When moments matter, our veterinarians’ and staff members’ exceptional skill and sophisticated onsite diagnostics are available to pinpoint the root of troubling symptoms quickly. The sooner we accurately understand what is causing your pet distress, the faster we can effectively treat the underlying problem.

Even seemingly unavoidable situations can also be helped along when seconds are critical. We and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) encourage pet parents to develop a First Aid kit. Some of these items may overlap with what you have in your (human) family members’ First Aid kits. Assure that all family members have access to:

  • Our number – 904-399-5557
  • Your pet’s medical record
  • A digital thermometer (to check your pet’s temp)
  • Muzzles or other similar restraints to reduce the risk of getting bit when your pet is in pain or disoriented (Note: Do not muzzle a vomiting pet!)
  • Spare leash, collar
  • Gauze as an alternative to a muzzle or to wrap wounded areas
  • Non-stick bandages (and non-stick tape to secure them)
  • Activated charcoal or Milk of Magnesia, and a 3% hydrogen peroxide product (use only as directed by us or by poison control in the event that your pet has ingested a poisonous or toxic substance)
  • Saline to cleanse wounds
  • Lubricating oils to protect wounds Even though dogs and cats are notoriously stoic in their response to illnesses, no one knows your beloved pet quite like you! If you sense something is amiss, we urge you to contact us without delay. Also, if your pet is due for a wellness exam, schedule an appointment at our Jacksonville location today. With these approaches, you can enjoy many happy, healthy years with your four-legged pals.
