Being prepared

One of the best things you can do to protect your pet during the COVID-19 pandemic is having a plan for the care of your pet should you become infected with the virus.

Create a plan for how you will care for your pet if you become sick and unable to care for them yourself Make sure you have adequate supplies for your pet in case you need to quarantine for several weeks and are unable to go to stores; this includes items like food, medications, potty pads for dogs if you don’t have a yard and cat litter Know your vet’s procedures for office visits during this time; many veterinarians have adjusted their protocols for the safety of both you and your pet

If you are sick with COVID-19

Because there is still so much to be learned about this virus, we are still not certain about the role of pets in the transmission of COVID-19. There is currently no evidence in the United States that animals play a role in spreading COVID-19. There have, however, been a small number of pets across the globe that have been reported to be infected, but asymptomatic, with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) after being in close contact with people who had the disease. To be on the safe side, we suggest restricting the amount of contact you have with your pets and other animals should you become ill from COVID-19. If possible, have a trusted friend or family member take care of your pet, and if you must be in close contact with your animal, wash your hands before and after touching them and wear a face mask.
